Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard 2015 Cuthbert Cabernet Sauvignon

* 94 Punkte; review Gary Walsh - Wine Front; New livery for the bottles I note. I visited Kay Brothers a few months back, and did a mini vertical of Block 6. I haven’t written that up, as yet, but I’ll fold it in with the review of the 2015 Block 6 that just came through the door. Interestingly, a flood of wine arrived this Monday (it’s usually the busiest day of the week), and The Vales were well represented – Kay Brothers (6), Dodgy Brothers (6), and from an even dodgier brother from another mother, Doug Govan, some Rudderless wines (4). Total that day was 58 bottles. I need an assistant. And a stunt taster. Or something. Maybe a crème de menthe on ice to sooth the throat, and calm the nerves. And possibly an editor, to cut these insane introductions down to size.

510 x 6 packs produced. Plenty of toasty savoury oak and baking spices, blackberry and blackcurrant, almond, aniseed and dried mint. Medium to full bodied, fresher red fruits in with the black, toast, 85% dark chocolate in both flavour and tannin texture, very firm acidity, though it feels well-settled, and a long finish slick with savoury oak, graphite tannin and ferrous character. Lively, earthy, individual. Region and grape wrestle for supremacy, though I feel both come out winners. Trinkreife: 2020 - 2035+ (Gary Walsh - Wine Front 30. August 2017)
